The trouble with healthy food is that it just doesn’t taste as good once you’ve eliminated all the fun stuff like sugar, fat, and gluten.
While I can completely understand how real this struggle is, I can assure you that after some time your tastes will change and you’ll start believing that a piece of broiled fish and some roasted asparagus is life.
Don’t believe me?
Did you know that our taste buds change every 5 to 7 years? Given that they don’t all change at once, there’s constantly some new baby buds appearing in your mouth that you can entice into loving healthier flavors.
With that said, there’s still a transition period where healthy food can taste a little bland. But fear not, I’ve got you covered. These are 3 of my favorite spices that can make pretty much anything taste interesting, from egg whites to tilapia with virtually no added calories.
Note – they do have sodium, so if you’re on a low sodium diet, skip over these suggestions and head down to my bonus healthy taste enhancer ideas 🙂
Holy mother of Creamy ranch dressing, Flavor Gods Ranch Seasoning is the BOMB. I sprinkle it on everything from protein to veggies, to my morning eggs and even popcorn. Believe it or not, it will even make a salad taste like a ranch-flavored treat. Here’s a recipe from the Flavor God’s themselves for a healthy alternative to your average store bought cream dressing. Why not just buy ranch dressing? Because it’s full of fat (not the healthy kinds), cheap oils and sugar. This dressing is full of healthy goodness 🙂
HOMEMADE FLAVOR GODS RANCH DRESSING RECIPE
- 6 ounces sour cream or Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp – Flavor God Ranch seasoning
- 1 tsp. Flavor God pink salt & pepper
- splash of lemon juice
- a clove of minced garlic
- 1 tbsp. parsley, fine chop
I may have mentioned this a million times, but I have an unhealthy addiction to Lays Ketchup Chips. So much so, that when I get my hands on a bag, I will fight to the death not to share a single crumb. Fortunately, you can’t buy them here in the US (unless you want to pay $17 for a bag on Amazon, which I’ve done, don’t judge). But now the world is a better place because I can capture the essence of ketchup chips without the fat and calories. Instead, I sprinkle Flavor Gods Ketchup Seasoning on potato wedges, toss it on a salad, or put it on roasted chicken or fish. This stuff is so damn good and yet, zero guilt.
This seasoning is life-changing. I love to put it in my 60-second microwave English Muffins and coat salmon filets with it. Don’t underestimate the intense taste this little seasoning can deliver. Best of all, it adds a crunchiness to whatever you add it to which is always good.
Bonus Flavor Enhancers
Back in my fitness competition days where boiled fish was the norm I had to get creative with low-calorie sauces and flavor enhancers. These are just a few that went a lot way to make healthy food, delicious food.
Salsa – there are so few calories in salsa that it’s almost not worth tracking.
Mustard – believe it or not, you can make some pretty interesting dressings and sauces with a mustard base. Just add a little lemon juice, garlic and a dash of olive oil and you’ve got a great dressing for fish. If you want a creamy dressing try mixing mustard and greek yogurt with a few spices for an interesting treat.
Lime or lemon juice – Freshly squeezed juice on a salad or roasted veggies with fish brings out the flavor of the food without adding any additional calories.
