Bloody Caesars are the Canadian version of Bloody Marys. They’re less thick, more spicy and in my opinion – 4000 times better! Give it a whirl and see what you think!
As a new(ish) member of the American family, I feel honored to acknowledge those who have lost their lives in the fight for freedom, as fellow citizens. I adore this country, even though I’m a Canadian by birth, and at heart.
So in honor of my two favorite landmasses, I thought I’d share a little recipe that is revered by every Canadian, and yet interestingly is not well known down here.
You guys should know this one. It’s pure divinity in a glass.
I give you….the Bloody Caesar!
Now, before you dismiss this as a mere takeoff of the bloody Mary, I assure you, it’s in a league all it’s own, especially if you’re not a tomato juice fan. Clamato juice is nothing short of spectacular, and with all the fixin’s and a generous shot of vodka, it’s sure to make your long weekend, just a little bit more flavorful.
So. First off, let me apologize for not giving you this recipe sooner. The ingredients are a little complex, and will most likely require a trip to the grocery store, but it’s so worth it!
The key is to layer the ingredients in the glass once it’s been rimmed with celery salt and lemon juice. And whatever you do, don’t skip the rim. It’s the best part!!!
Seasoning your Caesar so it’s just the right degree of spiciness is a fine art to be honed over time and cocktails, but not to worry… practicing is half the fun!
I like to buy Clamato juice in small jars like this as once you open a larger juice jar, you pretty much have to consume the whole thing within a few days. That’s great if you’re making lots of drinks for lots of people, but it’s hard to have more than one or two of these babies yourself. It’s like drinking a salad (drenched in vodka of course), and you can only eat so much salad.
Once you’ve created your cocktail masterpiece, it’s important to enjoy it in a good place…preferably outside, on a sunny patio, or on a dock overlooking a lake is best (as any Canadian will tell you).
Then find something wonderful to toast to. Good health, big love, or fallen heroes are all good things.
- 1 cup clamato juice
- 1 tablespoon of celery salt
- 2 tablespoons of lime or lemon juice in a small bowl
- 1.5 shots of vodka (or three if it's been a tough day)
- salt, pepper, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce to taste
- ½ t horseradish, optional
- celery stalk for garnish
- Put the celery salt on a plate, and the lemon juice in a small bowl.
- Dip the rim of your glass in the lemon juice first, just so it lightly coats the rim.
- Dip the wet rim into the celery salt and gather a good amount of coating
- Fill the glass with ice (careful not to wash away your rim!)
- Add your vodka
- Then add the spices and seasoning over the ice
- Fill the glass with clamato juice, leaving ½ an inch of space at the top of the glass
- Add a celery stalk to the glass for garnish and a little snack
- If you like spicy, add the horseradish and give the drink a stir
- Olives and a lime wedge also make fancy decoration too.
