Are you a wanna-be runner? If you've always wanted to get into running, but felt intimidated, Beachbody's new program, 30 Day Breakaway, might just be exactly what you need to get started! (Scroll down for the sample workout or click here to order the program now).
Personally I have a love-hate relationship with running. Literally, sometimes I love it, sometimes it’s the hardest thing for me.
Creating a running base - where you can maintain around a 3 mile distance without too much trouble is the key to enjoying it. If you head out for a 3-miler with absolutely no previous experience, I can guarantee, you’re not going to love it.

Now that we’re getting into cooler weather, believe it or not, it’s the best time to take up running! To make that transition as painless and injury-free as possible, Beachbody is releasing a new program called 30 Day Breakaway.
It’s a 4-week program that will not only get you off the couch and on the road, but it will also give you a weight lifting regime that will keep you strong, and injury-free.
When does 30-Day Breakaway launch?
30-day Breakaway launches Oct 19, which is perfect because that will give you just enough time to train for a 5K turkey trot which seems to be the thing everyone does before Thanksgiving dinner here in the US.
If you’re in Canada or Europe, there may not be a local race to participate in, but not to worry. Anyone who completes 30 Day Breakaway by running their 5K can submit their results to the Beachbody Challenge to receive a 5K medal to commemorate the achievement.
You can even participate in Beachbody’s first ever Virtual 5K run in November and help raise money for Hope of the Valley, Beachbody’s charity partner dedicated to fighting homelessness.
The Beachbody Foundation is going to match donations up to $500,000. The weeklong event runs Nov 21 through Nov 29. Registration opens today at 30daybreakawayvirtual5k.com.
Note - this is all optional. You can just do the program without the race if you prefer.
How does the program work?
30 Day Breakaway is built around short and effective weight lifting workouts followed by interval run training that pushes you for short bursts at a level that’s right for you, whether that’s a brisk walk, slow jog, or steady run.
Each week, your Super Trainer Idalis Velazquez, leads you through a mix of running and resistance training techniques that will ultimately help you to train smarter, build lean muscle, and break away for a 5K run.
How do you do the running portion of 30-Day Breakaway?
The run portion can be done outside, where you would download an audio recording to cue you on speed, tempo and proper form.
If you prefer to run indoors and you have access to a treadmill, you’re in for a real treat, because you get to follow Idalis through some amazing terrain - from beach to mountains. I swear you’ll forget you're running on a treadmill.
Try a 30 Day Breakaway Sample Workout
The best way to sample what the experience will be like is to try a sample workout. I LOVE this experience and it really helped me stay mindful of form and how to carry my body to avoid injury.
Who is Idalis Velazquez?
I got to meet Idalis, creator of 30-Day Breakaway during a pre-launch event. She has an amazing story of going from athlete to a life-threatening diagnosis during a pregnancy, only to fight her way back to being fit. It’s an amazing story.
She is also a certified fitness trainer, track and field athlete and Beachbody Super Trainer.
Program Details
Program length: 30 days
Workouts per week: 6
Workout length: 20 - 45 min
Equipment needed: a set of light, medium, and heavy dumbbells, Beachbody Resistance Loops, a foam roller, and a good pair of running shoes
30 Day Breakaway Test Group Results!
In speaking with Idalis, she mentioned that some of the folks in the test group got amazing results - up to 15 pounds in 30 days, with up to 6 to 8 inches lost. This is always a result of both the workouts and proper nutrition, so keep in mind, you can’t have one without the other.
One thing she does mention is not to weight yourself every day because you’re doing a mix of weight lifting and cardio intervals, there will be days where you retain water and days where you’re more dehydrated from the running. So be patient if you see the scale go up and down and trust that the end result will be positive.
