Bang Bang Shrimp is the infamous appetizer at Bonefish Grill, a chain of seafood restaurants in Alabama. The dish is fried and then smothered in a “Bang Bang” sauce. Today I’m going to show you how to replicate that awesome dish at home, at a fraction of the calories (but all the same flavor).
Why you’ll love it
This is a basic air fried shrimp recipe, which on its own is delicious, but what makes it stand out is the bang bang sauce. It would be more accurate to call it a “tang tang” sauce (because it’s very tangy), but who doesn’t love saying “bang bang”?
Bang bang (<- I can’t stop!)
Stand out ingredients
Sweet Thai chili sauce! That’s what makes Bang Bang so tang tang -y (sorry, I’ll stop now). Typically this sauce is made with Mayo, but we’re lightening it up with 0% greek yogurt, and I actually think it tastes better this way.
No Air Fryer? No Problem
The first part of the recipe will show you how to air fry shrimp, but if you don’t have an air fryer, just pop your shrimp on a skewer and grill them like Gina over at SkinnyTaste does. I’ve tried them both ways and they’re both delicious.
Again, this dish is all about the sauce, so you make the shrimps however you want.
What's in bang bang sauce?
- ½ c Greek yogurt (you can use mayo instead if you prefer)
- 2 Tbsp Sweet Thai chili sauce
- 1 tsp Sriracha or (or you can use hot sauce or wing sauce - but start with a ½ tsp unless you like it spicy)
- ½ tsp Lime juice
- Pinch of salt
How to Make it
Just combine the ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. That’s it!
How to Make Bang Bang Shrimp in an Air fryer
Step 1
Start with raw, unfrozen shrimp. Remove veins, shells and tails.
Step 2
In a small bowl, add ¼ cup of egg white (or 2 eggs, mixed) and on a small plate combine the coating (coconut flour, onion powder, salt and pepper).
Step 3
Spray the bottom of your air fryer with a non-stick spray and bring the tray over to your workspace.
Step 4
Now start by taking a shrimp, dip it in the egg, then coat it in the coconut mixture. Once coated, add it to the bottom of the Air Fryer Tray. Keep doing this until all shrimps are done, but make sure they aren’t touching in the air fryer. It’s better to cook two batches than over stuff the fryer.
Step 5
Cook for 5 minutes at 375 degrees, then take the tray out, flip your shrimp and cook for another 5 mins until slightly brown on all sides.
Step 6
Remove shrimp from the air fryer, arrange on your dish and drizzle with bang bang sauce. Garnish with cilantro or scallions.
What to eat with Bang Bang Shrimp?
Well, they make a great appetizer on their own, or pair them with a salad for lunch. However, I will say, I think Bang Bang tacos, particularly with the grilled shrimp option would be ridiculously good.

Simply skip the shrimp recipe above and just skewer a pound of shrimp on bbq skewers and grill them for 5 minutes on each side with a little olive oil, salt and pepper.
